Speaker: Dr Dominic G Rothwell, Staff Scientist, Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology Group, Cancer Research -UK Manchester Institute.

Speaker Profile: Dr Dominic G. Rothwell BSc DPhil
Dr Dominic Rothwell is a senior scientist within the Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology Group at the CR-UK Manchester Institute. Following obtaining a BSc (Hon) in Applied Genetics from the University of Liverpool Dr Rothwell studied for his DPhil with Professor Ian Hickson at the Institute of Molecular Medicine at the University of Oxford, focussing on the mechanisms of action of DNA repair genes. After which he moved into more translational research, initially with Dr John Norton looking for molecular markers in multiple myeloma before joining Professor Robert Hawkins laboratory at the University of Manchester where he established molecular monitoring of immunotherapy trials. In 2011 he joined the Clinical Experimental Pharmacology group of Professor Caroline Dive and began his current research focus on the molecular analysis of blood borne biomarkers for use in cancer, focusing on utilising liquid biopsies to enable the molecular characterisation of tumours from patients’ blood. This has the potential to remove the reliance on tumour biopsies and facilitate the collection of longitudinal samples to better track disease progression and give greater insight into tumour evolution and heterogeneity. This research involves analysis of both DNA and RNA down to the single cell level, and also the development of sensitive and reliable Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) approaches that enable the elucidation of whole genome and whole transcriptome data.
